Episode of 15 of Black Tech Unplugged features Dr. Jeremy Margurder-Waisome and has a listener survey for you to complete!
Dr. Jeremy A. M. Waisome is a graduate of the University of Florida’s (UF) Department of Civil & Coastal Engineering where she obtained her bachelors and masters of science and doctorate of philosophy degrees. She currently serves as Postdoctoral Associate in the Computer & Information Sciences & Engineering Department at UF and Project Manager of the National Science Foundation Broadening Participation in Computing Alliance: Institute for African-American Mentoring in Computing Sciences (iAAMCS, pronounced “I Am CS”). She works in the Human Experience Research Lab with Dr. Juan E. Gilbert, where she conducts research on broadening participation in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and computing.
As Project Manager of iAAMCS, Dr. Waisome is focused on improving the dissemination of data produced by the grant through publications and presentations at relevant public and academic venues.
iAAMCS utilizes resources from nationally recognized programs and projects, including mentoring strategies from several past NSF programs, to:
- Increase the number of African-Americans receiving Ph.D. degrees in computing sciences
- Promote and engage students in teaching and training opportunities
- Add more diverse researchers into the advanced technology workforce
Also mentioned in this episode is the National Society of Blacks in Computing (NSBC) Conference. NSBC is a safe space for participants to receive mentorship, increase professional networks, enhance social capital, and plan their career trajectories. This year’s conference will be co-located with the Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA) conference, which supports professionals and students at all levels in the fields of information technology, computer science, and related STEM fields.
